Oregon Trail Ruts - Guernsey, Wyoming

Wet Spring means lots of wildflowers. Today we took a trip to the Oregon Trail Ruts south of Guernsey. This is the time of year the wagons would have been rolling through this area.

Wonder how many years the flowers were this spectacular.

All photos from the Trail Ruts this evening.

Neat photos.

One thing that I've become very aware of over the years is how many Wyoming localities actually feature wagon ruts, once you know what to look for. At one time I thought they were really only visible near Guernsey and Ryan Hill, but this is actually not the case at all. I've run across them in a location near Independence Rock that's a bit off the beat trail, but which very clearly features them in a place where some immigrants were skirting the Sweetwater. And of course the Bozeman Trail is pretty visible near Ft. Fetterman, but then again to my surprise near old Ft. Reno. The Oregon Trail turns out to be visible in all sorts of places once you know how to find them.

All of which is massively impressive, and frankly a little scary, in that the trails are not only historic (of course) but the scaring of the wagons remains pretty clear in many many places well over a century since the last wagons rolled.

Beautiful flowers and photos, Neil. We're blooming here in TX as well... all that rain we've been getting. As far as the Oregon trail goes, yep, those ruts are still there... at least from Kansas through Idaho... I've been on remnants of the trail on that stretch.

Thanks for the comments, The Ruts are impressive, interesting what you point out about ruts in many places. There are ruts a few miles south of the well know ones in Guernsey. And Bradley this is the best I have seen the wildflowers in a few years, good rains here and in your part of the country.

Nice flowers! I am still amazed that trail ruts are still visible in 2015. Wow!

Oh the ruts are definitely visible. Indeed, there's a place just south of Douglas where, after you find the trail marker, you can see the path of the trail for miles. And there's a lot of places like that.

If you click this link, to one of my other blogs, you will see me standing in the ruts about a half mile south of my house. http://oldtrailspublishing.blogspot.com

It is amazing that as Pat says, there are ruts that one could still follow after all these years.
